Visit to Sant Cugat del Valles
After a briefing and a small breakfast, we’ll start our route at the Monastery of Sant Cugat, which in the 4th century was a Roman fort, known as Castrum Octavianum. The fort was built to protect the crossroad of two old roman roads, the Via Augusta and Vía de Egara (Terrassa) to Barcino (Barcelona). According to the Christian tradition, Saint Cucuphas (Cugat, in catalan), who had come from Africa to preach the Christian faith in Roman territory, was martyred here in 313.
The village gathers around this beautiful ancient monastery complex, which is over 1000 years old and includes Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles.
